Six Going on Seven

This guy again?
Dear Grayson,

At six (nearly 7!) months old, you are a delight! You are right in the center of the golden moments of baby hood, where you recognize people and things and you respond to us, but you can't move around too much, so destruction is still pretty minimum.

I love watching your wheels turn as you practice picking things up, holding them, and putting them down. You have figured out that moving those things attached to your body (your arms and legs) accomplishes different things and you are now in the process of putting together all those pieces. You are on the cusp of crawling and moments away from your first tooth, I'm sure of it!

You've been eating solid (and I use the term "solid" loosely - pun intended!)  food for about a month and half and you are a true foodie in the making. I cannot believe how intense you are! Eating is a full on contact sport for you and I'm pretty sure your motto is "let no surface go uncovered by oatmeal!".  You attack the spoon with gusto!

Your favorite person is Mommy, but you love your family. Bob Bob and Nana make you laugh. Daddy makes you giggle. Brooklyn always gets your sweetest smiles. The votes are in -- you are a sweetheart!

Love the smile - hate the blur!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
