In Which Brett & Jenna become Brenna!

My day started at 5:30am - breakfast for Grayson. At six, I went by to wake Jenna up, only to find her bright eyed, bushy tailed, and headed for her shower. I practically force fed her a slice of toast with peanut butter (she took maybe three bites) while we got hair and make up done. Groomsman Jason came by looking for his tie and socks (Jenna's response: We gave it to them 12 hours too soon!). Other than that minor snaffoo, the morning went on without a hitch.  Jenna exuded a calm excitement.  As Ron (the pastor) had said at the rehearsal, the details were all set.  Now was the time to relax and take it all in.

We met the bridesmaids at the church and found they had finished decorating the sanctuary, which was breathtaking!! Jenna and Brett picked Little Church in the Pines (in part) for its simple, natural beauty, but the little touches they added -- tin pails with yellow pom poms and navy ribbon, the communion elements -- really made it sparkle.

The bride and groom chose to meet before the wedding for pictures.  Brett gave Jenna a kiss to which flower girl Olivia replied "Eww gross!" Ah to be six again! Pictures were fun and amazingly fast, especially considering that photographer Carli was like six months pregnant! The flowers were yellow hydrangeas, which looked smashing next to the navy dresses! I cannot wait to see the pictures!

After pics we put the bride in hiding, which probably would have worked better if friends and family hadn't kept coming back to find us! So even though we were well ahead of schedule, the time flew by! We had a sweet time of prayer with Jenna - more evidence that she has surrounded herself with wonderful, godly women.

Finally it was time to start! We got into our place, the processional started and...we had no groomsmen! Apparently they had chosen that moment to have a quick prayer with Brett.  Jenna leaned over and whispered to Dad, "What have they been doing for the last three hours?!" They made it before the song was over and everyone got down the aisle without incident, including Jenna and of course everyone cried!

The ceremony was beautiful, intimate, unique, and worshipful. Some things that I loved...

...watching Jenna and Brett say "I do"
...catching my husband's eye and remembering our vows
...taking communion and hearing the congregation join in the hymn
...dancing down the aisle with Brooklyn and being the first to hug the new Mr & Mrs!

The reception was, in a word, fun. Jenna and Brett glowed! Even though the party was moved inside due to the threat of a rain/thunderstorm (which, as I predicted, did not make its appearance until we left!), it seemed like everyone had a good time. Ray wowed people as the DJ (he was even asked to leave a card at the church so if someone needed a wedding singer he could be recommended. Do I smell a career here? )

We danced, we ate the most delicious brownies and cheesecake, I gave what can only be described as an awesome speech, and we sent the bride and groom off through a tunnel of spirit fingers! The bridesmaids had the place cleaned up in no time and we were on our way as the first rain drops fell.

The following day we had the wedding party (including the bride and groom) over to the cabin for brunch. I wasn't sure how well this part would go, but it was actually a lot of fun. Plus it gave Jenna and Brett a chance to say good bye and thank you to their closest friends, which was nice.

My overall impression of the day is that it was pretty much perfect. I hope Jenna and Brett will always look back on it with fondness!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
