In Which Father's Day is Relaxing Summer Fun!

Happy Father's Day to the two best fathers I know...my own Dad, who sets the bar so high!, and my husband, who has not only given me three beautiful children, but is completely invested in this parenting journey with me!

In celebration of the men in our life, I made Ray an omelet (my first ever attempt!) which Brooklyn and Grayson delivered to him in bed. Then we got ready for church, I had a pregnancy hormone induced meltdown which scared everybody in the family, and we were on our way!

We had a wonderful time of worship and connection. I absolutely love looking at scripture through the filter of our absolutely epic story -- Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. This is the winning formula that we find in all great storytelling mediums!

Jeffrey took us all to lunch at La Parilla, which was a really delicious and good time! Grayson and Brooklyn, despite being tired, were remarkably well behaved. Brooklyn and I played games with Grayson to keep him awake on the ride home. Fortunately he found them amusing rather than frustrating, so it worked!

At home, we went our separate ways. Grayson napped. I napped. Brooklyn (snuggled next to me - which I loved!) watched a movie, and Ray worked out in the basement. I felt much better after my nap. Ray left for work that evening, and mom and I took the kids up to the pool. It was super crowded with the "weekend" crowd (the teenagers and adults who really only come in the evenings or on the weekend, so we don't usually see them). But we had plenty of room to swim, so it wasn't too bad.

We planned on grilling ribs for dinner, but since we were all still pretty full from lunch, Dad took me to the store for some fruit and hummus and crackers. The kids had corn dogs and we just snacked.

The kids took a late, blue bath (it must have been 8:00pm by this point, and blue thanks to the "Color My Bath" tablets that Ashley gave Brooklyn). Grayson went right to bed and Brooklyn and I made dessert for everyone and watched Lazy Town. Strange show. Brooklyn did try a few of her "stay out of bed" tricks, but went down fairly easy. She was asleep in less than five minutes! I love summer time for the pool and the way it tires her out!!

Aside from the raging discomfort of my overstuffed and very heavy midsection, I have enjoyed a pleasant evening of TV, frozen pizza, and cheesecake, brought home from McAlisters by my favorite man. All in all, a very good day!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
