In Which We Survive September!

Birthdays...Wedding...Funeral...Theater...Work...School...Travel...Sickness...CYT...Gymnastics...wow...I'm looking back over our September calendar and wondering: how did we do it all?

Brett, Jenna and their new addition Piper, moved to Smyrna. Yay! It's so nice having them close by. Of course they are busy looking for work and establishing themselves in their community, but we still get to see them pretty frequently. Mom and Dad celebrated 31 years of marriage by flying out to California to help them move all their stuff back east!

Ray was promoted to shift lead/Catering Coordinator at McAlister's and so was finally able to quit Target. His schedule is gradually becoming more predictable and I can see that he is growing in his management role. Acting is a little slow right now, but truthfully I am thankful for the breather. I think we needed this time to adjust to McAlister's and I am confident that the roles will come in God's timing.

Brooklyn is doing very well in Cornerstone. I am more confident than ever that this was the right choice for her. I think both she and I respond well to having the external accountability and resources of the school, while also thriving under the flexibility of our homeschool days. We still have our challenges (more on that another time!) but I feel like we are in a good place. Extra-curricularly, she is showing great promise in CYT and gymnastics. In CYT she was able to conquer her fears, give an amazing audition and land difficult singing solo in the end of session showcase! She has also really taken to gymnastics, which she practices all the time! She has wonderful poise and is starting to gain control and strength.

Grayson turned 18 months old on September 5th. He is every bit the rambunctious toddler you would expect him to be! He speaks a terrific "toddler-ese" that is gradually sounding more and more like real words. Despite that, his vocabulary and his understanding of the world around him astounds me. He is a climber, a show off, a ham, and a sweet, tender-hearted little boy! He adores his sisters!! He wants to copy everything Brooklyn does and is always ready to grab Madi's paci if she happens to need it. He has settled in very well to his Monday/Wednesday preschool class. I was worried at first that he was too young (at just 18 months he is the youngest in the class) and it would be too traumatic for him. As much as I wanted the time to focus on Brooklyn's school, I didn't want it to be at Grayson's expense, so I was watching very closely, praying, and talking to his teachers to see if he could make the transition. I am very happy to see that he enjoys his class time, loves his teachers, and is doing very well on his one nap a day schedule. My favorite part is that he is proud to show us his art work!

Madi turned 3 months old and other than struggling through a nasty bout of thrush, is just as sweet and mellow as ever. The thrush was painful for both of us. Our initial round of treatment helped me, but not her. Her second round of treatment still wasn't working and really upset her tummy. On her third round of treatment, the doctor prescribed something stronger, which did finally knock out the thrush, but still hurts her tummy. It turns out our mellow little Madilyn is just as dramatic as the rest of us! Even so, she is a blessing in our house and a delight in our hearts!

We attended my cousin Rachel's wedding in Grand Rapids, MI. I found Michigan to be delightful, the wedding beautiful, and travelling by myself with Madi (the other kids took a different flight with Nana, Aunt Jenna, and Uncle Brett) was like a vacation. She handled the flight like a total pro!

Sadly, we received news that weekend that my Uncle Bill on my mother's side passed away. The following weekend Nana, Aunt Jenna, Brooklyn, Madi, and I took a girl's road trip down to Panama City Beach for the memorial service. We gathered with family and my uncles friends at sunset on the beach for what turned out to be a very fitting tribute to his memory.

I love fall. The cooler weather, the holidays...I'm excited to see what God has in store for us.

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
