In Which Grayson is 11 months and 10 days old

My how time flies!  Grayson, you are in your 11th month, which, if you're doing the math, means you will very soon be one year old. Amazing. As far as development goes you are right on track with your age group.  You walk everywhere you possibly can, though of course you still do more falling and balancing than anything else.  You remind me of a little E.T., especially when I put you in your oversize "big brother" t-shirt.

It's very strange to think of you as a big brother when you are so very little yourself.  I try to imagine what things will be like once baby Maddi arrives, but just can't quite get there. In some of my musings you are far more advanced than you are likely to be, and in others you are still 11 months old. One thing I do know is that you are a fairly easy going child.  You respond well to routine (as does your big sister, Brooklyn) and you are content so long as your needs are met. That, I can deal with!

There are a couple of things we need to work on. First - your communication style. Your method for getting our attention is to scream and bang on things. Let me just tell you: there are better ways! This is one of those areas I enjoy watching because you are so very different from Brooklyn! Brooklyn babbled. You BABBLE! There is power behind your words and you are constantly "on the phone" (whether that phone is a toy phone, banana, remote control, whatever!).

Second: Night Terrors. We have a family history of sleep talking, and that genetic trait manifests in you as Night Terrors. Experts assure me that they cause you no harm and you don't even remember them, so let me just tell you -- they are terrifying for Mommy. No one else in the house enjoys them either. They can be triggered by developmental leaps, separation anxiety, and (most commonly) lack of sleep/changes to routine. So when I tell you to take a nap, you know I mean business!

We have much to look forward to as you approach your first birthday. I wish I could say you'll get your first taste of cake and ice cream, but Nana's already taken care of that ;0) Regardless, I enjoy watching you grow and look forward to the little man you are on your way to becoming!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
