In Which A Fun Friday is Had By All

Confession: I was dreading Friday a little bit, especially when I woke up that morning with a massive head cold.  Everything we had planned would be fun and good, but tight schedules always make me tense. But everything went off without a hitch and we had a great evening! Win-Win-Win!

So first, I took Brooklyn to Catch Air for her classmate Ellen's birthday party. Ray kept Grayson home for the first hour (HUGE BLESSING!) so I actually got to sit and talk with some of the other moms and grandmas, and even found a carpool partner for the zoo field trip on Monday!

We did have to leave the party early, but Brooklyn was quite understanding about it. She was soaked in sweat from all her running around. Good thing Fabrefaction is a casual theater venue!

We dropped Grayson off with the Hathcock's, and I know he had a great time playing with Nash and Olivia.

Then Brooklyn and I were on our way! We stopped at Wendy's so I could get some dinner.

I was nervous taking Brooklyn to see Titanic. I really wrestled with how she would handle the material. Would the story of a sinking ship be to heavy for her? Or would it go so far over her head that she would be bored?  I really had no idea and I wasn't even sure on how to prepare her. I ended up telling her the bare minimum basics - Titanic is about a ship that was big and beautiful and everyone was excited to sail on it. Then I focused more on Daddy's part - which songs he would sing and who he was with. We'd had dinner with some of the cast members the week before, so Brooklyn felt pretty comfortable knowing who was who!

She squirmed enough throughout the first act that I know she was a little bored, at least during some of the quieter, "wordier" moments. But she loved the big musical numbers, Daddy's scenes, and the beautiful dresses. I checked with her during intermission to see how much of the story she was catching, and I was surprised by how much she understood.

In the second act she did, again, seem a little bored, and even asked me if there would be another intermission! But when the show was over she popped up out of her chair and said "Daddy did such a great job!!"

I was surprised again on the way home when she told Ray that her favorite part was when Miss Paige (who played Alice Beane) danced with the first class. Then she proceeded to explain that Miss Paige wasn't supposed to be there, and that's why she and Daddy fought, but, then in the end she asked him for forgiveness and they said that they loved each other, so it was all okay. Way more intuitive than I give her credit for!!

In the end it all worked out! Titanic sank without traumatizing my daughter. Grayson played with Nash without traumatizing Summer and Rob. A busy, but very fun Friday night!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
