In Which I Shower!

This was a lovely weekend. I flew with my family (Grayson's first airplane ride!) to California where we celebrated the future and remembered our foundation.

Chanell and I (with MUCH help from Mom, Edie, and Judy) hosted a bridal shower for Jenna in San Clemente. The whole day was so laid back and (for lack of a better word!) lovely! The theme was coffee and boasted mimosas, chicken salad croissants, spinach salad, and a scone bar featuring a delicious assortment of preserves. Dessert was brownies (which will likely show up as the groom's cake on the big day) and lemon bars topped with blueberries (representing not only Jenna's favorite sweet treat, but also her wedding colors of yellow and navy). Everything was so elegant. Chanell made some beautiful coffee and candle centerpieces and we had little tributes to Brett and Jenna all around the room, including a letter written by Brett as a surprise to Jenna!

Of course my favorite anecdote of the day had to do with the household object game.  We dressed Jenna in an apron that was pinned with about 15 ordinary household items that we had bought from the dollar store and carried on to the plane with us.  Jenna waltzed around the room for a minute and after she left, the guests had to write down everything they could remember. (P.S. I love that Sasha, Jenna's boss' 7 year old daughter, won the game!) We gave extra points if the guests could identify the three items that didn't make it past airport security! Yes, that's right! My dear mother attempted to get a pairing knife, a fruit knife, and a corkscrew through security. Kudos to the Atlanta airport for catching the contraband, but shame on them for missing the pizza cutter! We could have taken down the plane! It really made for a fun addition to the game!

When the shower was over, we packed up the family and hit the road for a five hour drive to Clovis, CA and shower number two!

This one, co-hosted by my cousin Jennae (again, with much help from mom), was an afternoon tea in the garden.  Jennae did an absolutely beautiful job decorating with flowers and tea pots. We did end up doing a lot of scrapping of some really good ideas, but ended up with another elegant, laid back shower. Both mom and Jenna mentioned that the Fresno shower really captured what they had always imagined a shower to be; mom because it was outdoors, and Jenna because we had people their from all walks, ages, and relationships (family and friends).

The point of both showers, of course, was to honor Jenna and celebrate her upcoming nuptials.  Mission accomplished!  Pictures will be posted as soon as I get them from my designated photographers!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...
