In Which Madi is One Month Older

Once I had a secret love, that lived within the heart of me. All too soon my secret love became impatient to be free. Now I shout it from the highest hill. Even told the golden daffodill. At last my heart's an open door, and my secret love's no secret anymore!

Our secret little love, Madilyn Rae, is one month old today. Time certainly does fly! Actually, looking back over the last few weeks it's hard to believe it's only been a month -- so much has happened!

Of course there was the birth (that wonderful event that started it all!) followed by visits from Mamaw, Aunt Judith, and Justin. Mommy has been busy with a very difficult recovery that included extra surgery and lots of trips to the doctor. Last week was your first VBX, and I'm pretty sure you loved it!

At one month old you are approximately 8 lbs, 19 inches and growing steadily. You are a very polite, efficient eater. You can smile a little bit and you can roll from your back to your tummy when you put your mind to it. You sleep very well, sometimes 4 or 5 hours at a time (thank you!) and you are comfortable just about anywhere that we put you. Your favorite place to fall asleep is nestled in someone's arms! So far you are pretty mellow and content, though lately you seem to have found your voice and are quite comfortable expressing your discomfort when you need to!
First Bath - Taking it easy!
Grayson calls you "Baby". It is one of the few words he says with any consistency. He enjoys looking at you (though he would much rather touch!) and he is interested in everything you have - your pacifier, blanket, bassinet, breast - everything. My theory is that he recognizes those items from his own world and he's connecting with you through your shared interests.

Brooklyn adores you. She enjoys picking out your clothes, singing to you, and holding you for short periods of time. She makes up nicknames (sometimes she calls you Madikins) and she can't bear to hear you cry! She is a wonderful big sister and a great help to Mommy. I hope the two of you will always have a special relationship.

In short, you are very much loved and a welcome addition to our family! Life is still a little crazy, especially since it is summer and Mommy is still on the mend, but we are settling into something that resembles a routine. Soon Brooklyn will start school at Cornerstone, which will be a whole new adventure for us. This is a wonderful, albeit chaotic, season in our lives, and I am excited to see how you continue to grow!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which We March On

March comes in a like a lion, what else? Still the snow, never melts! (If you're singing along to Seven Brides...you're right!) Where did that saying come from anyone? I get it. February was so mild, it felt more like spring than winter. Then just before spring actually arrives we get our only significant snow of the season! We had a great overnight snowfall, a real snow day, the kind where everything actually closes (my favorite!). Everything should have closed the next day too because of the winds and the drifts. Downright dangerous! But we made it through, alright. Aside from the weather, March was a whirlwind of activity. Grayson's sixth birthday, Jonah opened at Sight and Sound, Piercing Word/King's Kid's rehearsals, and Ray's birthday all kept me pretty busy. We have one more week to go during which we have Madi's birthday celebration for her preschool class (her birthday is in June - don't ask), Brooklyn's Broadway Studio showcase, our...

A Day in Jaime's Homeschool (ages 10, 6, and 4)

Our days in this season of life follow a very relaxed structure. Each day has such very different demands. While I would prefer to go with the flow, whatever that may be, my kids prefer a more defined plan. They like to know what to expect at any given moment. So our daily rhythm falls somewhere between these two extremes.  My day starts between 6:30 and 7:00 AM with coffee and my Bible. I love connecting through Hello Mornings because of its grace based approach to starting my day in submission to the Lord. Through accountability, community, and Bible study I get that flexible structure I need - a big theme in my life right now! My "early riser" (the four year old) will often join me on the couch while I read. My husband makes breakfast while I enjoy a second cup of coffee and supervise morning chores. By 9 AM he is out the door to work (except when he's not...because that would be too easy.) At this point I give my kids a warning that we will start our school day at 9...
