In Which Madi is Four Months Old

October 22, 2012 - Madi Rae officially turned four months old!

At your check up you weighed in at a whopping 9 lbs 15 oz, and measured 22 inches long. Based on the growth charts I have, that put you in the 2nd percentile. But hey - at least you were on the charts!!

About a week prior to this appointment, I put you on formula due to a number of eating issues we seemed to be having. First, you had terrible gas every afternoon. We were almost thinking colic, except that it didn't ever last that long and there were lots of tricks to help you feel better such as the football hold. Unfortunately, once I started supplementing with formula, you lost interest in nursing. Considering all the facts, I believe something about the hormones in my birth control had an effect on my milk. My theory is that you were not getting enough at each feeding, which the doctor did confirm as a possible side effect. We gave it our best shot, but between the antibiotics (which I believe had a lasting effect on your poor tummy resulting in all that terrible gas), thrush, and my hormone affected supply, you are now a bottle fed baby!

Fortunately the results have been very positive and you are thriving! At a weight check on November 7th you were 11.5 lbs, putting you squarely in the 3rd percentile! Dr. Staviss says you'll likely just be a pettite little gymnast or ballet dancer or even a jockey!

Bundled up for the cold!
This is absolutely the golden age of baby hood! Too small to get into any trouble, you stay where I put you, but you also respond to your family with coos and giggles and smiles! You are (for the most part) sleeping through the night. You typically will have one good eight hour stretch (which can start anywhere from 6pm to 10pm) and then take about 4 oz of food, followed by another 4 to 6 hours. Your naps are slowly becoming more regular as well. You've always followed the basic Eat, Play, Sleep pattern, but now that you are a little older, your play times are beginning to take more shape and your nap times are requiring a little more help (a lovey, a paci, a comfy spot to sleep, etc.).

Although you have found your voice and are more than capable of letting us know when you need something, you are very much our Mellow Madi. You are mostly content just to be in the same room with us.
Nice, healthy jowls!

A new look at the world!

In Which I Welcome September

I adore September.  It's not what you're thinking. I'm not a big fan of pumpkin spice anything and I'm not counting down the days until Christmas, but I do love Fall and Winter. True, September 1st is not the start of fall, but it is the beginning of the end of summer.  In September I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  The end of the oppressive heat and ever fluctuating vacation schedules. Rhythms return to normal. Apples will soon be out in delicious abundance and yes, pumpkins will turn the world a lovely color of orange. Cooler weather and warmer drinks; September is beautiful and full of promise.

In Which the End is NIGH!

Wow.  Just wow.  It is very nearly the end of the school year.  I'm sitting here, counting up our April attendance and realizing that we only need to log seven more days to meet the state requirement. Seven. One week.  Our very first year to educate our children at home is coming to a close.  I'm a little floored. Of course we have more that I want to accomplish than can be done in seven days so we will go on a little bit longer, but still, it's nice to have the ducks in a row.   I can't say enough about how good  God is.  This year will go down in my memory as an unqualified success!  We have learned so much, not only academically, but about our family culture, balancing flexibility with boundaries, and how to serve the Lord in the nitty-gritty day to day stuff of life.  I think the hardest part is yet to come. State requirements dictate that we must create a portfolio, submit to an independent evaluation, and turn in documentatio...

In Which We Lose a Roommate

Well folks, Madi is now eight months old and quite frankly, ready for her own room. She is certainly beyond needing night time feedings, but she still likes to wake up periodically for snuggles. But then again, so does Grayson. Regardless, she needs her own space, so let the juggling begin.  We have three bedrooms allocated to us. Brooklyn was in one. Grayson in the other, and we kept Madi's corner crib in our bedroom. We shuffled around different ideas of who could room together and how to best fit cribs and beds and whatnot and ultimately have decided to think of the two bedrooms as more of a complete nursery area. So now Madi's crib shares space with Brooklyn's toys and clothes. We call it the dressing room. Brooklyn's bed is in Grayson's room (which you would think is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to him!). Grayson's room is also home to his toys, and his dresser and closet that he shares with Madi. The vacant corner in our room (where Mad...
